How Does Reflexology Work?

Reflexology is somehow perceived as another form of exercise. In some way or the other, this is true. With reflexology, the exercise is applied to pressure sensors of the feet and hands. The stimulation of pressure prompts a response in the body. The response by the application of pressure should be appropriate and sufficient to gain good results.

Theories

The theories about the workings of reflexology are many. Some of the well established and researched reasons of efficient working are as follows:

Relaxation Effect

This is well recognized. A number of physiological changes take place in ones body when the body relaxes. The changes can be beneficial for good health. This is something that is most widely achieved by the use of reflexology.

Endorphin Release

Endorphin is said to be the best as well as the most natural painkiller for the body. By taking up reflexology, endorphin is said to be released into the bloodstream and reprieve from pain can be gained.

Improved Circulation

Direct application of pressure on the feet and hands augments venous return or better blood flow. This in turn warms the edges, helps nutrients get to the cells and takes away waste products. It also moves more oxygen into the cells where it is needed.

Direct Nerve Stimulation

Direct stimulation on the feet or hands puts pressure on the many thousands of nerve endings that reside there. This feels incredibly good.

Benefit of Touch

Touch is a basic human need and being nurtured and touched increases one's sense of well being.

The fight or flight response of the body is dependant on the reflexive network of which the hand are feet are a major part. The pressure sensors of the feet detect the ground under them. Changes that take place under the foot cause changes in tension levels throughout the body.

Lying down, sleeping, standing up, walking, sitting, running and playing - each activity calls for its proper internal alternations. The feet help the whole body adjust and change to meet the demands of the day. With the purposeful stimulation of the sensors in the feet, the body reacts by behaving in a much better and healthy manner. This is what is achieved through reflexology.
